NOW’S THE TIME

It has become a cliché to speak of “living in the moment,” and in this modern age, it is practically impossible to do. By common consent, we rush around, if not trying to get ahead, then just trying to keep up. Most of us seem to want some sort of soundtrack while we’re bustling, and it subconsciously buoys us up. Sometimes we’re even conscious of brief moments in that noise that transcend the wall of sound, supersede our immediate goals, and stop us in our tracks. If it’s really good music, we may be compelled to find out what it is, seek it out, and obtain it.  Ken Peplowski’s new disc, Enrapture, is such music. And, fortunately, it is obtainable by making a $50 membership contribution to KJazz TODAY and choosing it as your thank-you gift!

A great artist will capture a moment or a feeling and express it in such a way as to make us believe that only we can understand its truth, its beauty, and that it was a message specifically for us.  Such an artist is brave enough to go beyond the standard repertoire, to take us on exotic journeys of notes and emotions, to challenge us, and always to reward and inspire us.

Ken (or “Peps,” as he is nicknamed) has chosen to record some lesser-known, but wonderful tunes on this disc. For example, listen to this music from the Alfred Hitchcock film classic, Vertigo:

That’s in a category with Yusef Lateef’s version of “The Love Theme from Spartacus” or any of the renditions of “Delilah” (from Samson and Delilah) by Clifford Brown, Wes Montgomery and Milt Jackson, or Ellis Marsalis.

And what Ken has done with Ellington’s “The Flaming Sword” is all the more incredible if you first listen to the original, which is Duke’s big band version:

And then listen to Peps’ quartet:

Ken is a devout Beatles fan, and kept the faith even after they broke up. Here is a post-Beatles composition by John Lennon that struck Ken with its “beauty and simplicity,” and he tried to “reproduce that feeling here with just Martin Wind on bass” (with Peps on clarinet):

These are just some of the delights of Enrapture. We have a limited number of copies of this brand new release, and I strongly urge you to take this opportunity to get one. It’s one of those musical experiences that will stop time for you, give you that sensation that life is more than just hustling to survive, and will, as Shakespeare said, “hale souls out of men’s bodies.”

And, in addition to this gift incentive for becoming a member, and in further argument for doing it NOW, please remember that part of our job as a public radio station is to provide you with programming you might not otherwise get. KJazz is the ONLY place on the radio dial where you are likely to hear Ken Peplowski’s new disc. Or most of the rest of our programming!

You may hear something you’ve never heard before, or you may hear something you haven’t heard in years. Or maybe you’ll hear one of your current favorites. But we’re the only station in L.A. where you’ll hear jazz, blues, and Latin jazz, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

KJazz is YOUR radio station! Your jazz provider! The Keepers of the Flame! And we are made possible by YOUR support! 90% of our operating budget comes from you! $50 is all it takes for a year’s worth of great membership opportunities and to get this brand new disc by Ken Peplowski.

As Charlie Parker said, “Now’s the Time!”
